Tour de Tribury XIV September 30, 2006
The Southbury Interfaith Social Concerns Committee again sponsored this year's Tour de Tribury Bike and Walk-A-Thon, the fourteenth year for the Tour. As before, the proceeds from the event went to support the Southbury Fuel Bank, an organization that helps residents of Southbury maintain their homes warm throughout the winter season. Our thanks go out to the sponsors of the event, the riders, and the Knights of Columbus for their world famous Hot Dogs, and the many volunteers who made the day a success. These pictures show but a small part of the day. The day was made for a bike ride. Cool, bright sun, just perfect.
Well, the weather people say it will be a beautiful day. Cool and clear, perfect for a bike ride. For the folks who ride those 50 miles around the county, the day always seems to start a little foggy. And today is no exception. Cool, perhaps even cold, the day holds great promise. Joe is giving the last minute instructions to the 50 mile riders. Where are the problem areas in the ride? Where are the water stops? Where are the home made cookies? Home made cookies?
No one starts without a prayer. Our new Youth Minister Matt, was kind enough to be here for all groups and send them on their way with a prayer for their safety, and thanks for their efforts.
Don't they look happy? You would never guess it to look at them that they are about to start out on a 50 mile ride through Western Connecticut.
And here's the whole gang, ready to roll. Starting to warm up already, don't you think? At any rate, we had been assured that the fog would lift in just a few miles. And then, a beautiful day awaited.
No sooner had the 50 mile riders left, than the 25 mile riders started to arrive. Same drill. Sign in, get the trip sheet, look it over, try and figure it out. Ask any questions, and then...
...and then, off you go. Into the sunshine that did appear as promised.
Our last group of riders went 10 miles, down what is a really great ride to Shepaug Dam, along the river. What a day for a nice ride like that. Joe did his usual job of clearing up any questions on the trip, wishing everyone well, thanking them for their time and efforts, and then...
...and then, they are on their way. Looking forward to a relaxing ride along the river, nice scenery, good companionship, good cause. Doesn't get any better.
A small but dedicated group of walkers joined us this year. A brisk 2.2 mile walk down the sidewalks of Southbury to the Town Garage and back.
A few of the satisfied folks who joined together in the church hall for lunch after their ride and walk.
Lunch provided by the Knights of Columbus, cooking up their world famous hot dogs, snacks, fruit, drinks. What a great group of men, supporting the Tour every year. Thanks, gentlemen.
And so another year closes on the Tour de Tribury. And next week, the planning committee will meet for one last time to review the program, and start planning for next year. If you would be interested in helping plan this wonderful event, drop an e-mail. See You Then!!
