Community Thanksgiving Dinner 2006
If the lights are on in the kitchen, and it's about 5:00 AM, this must be Thanksgiving. Nothing like an early start to the day. But all those turkeys have got to be cooked and sliced in time for the Community Thanksgiving Dinner.
And in they go. Just the first round of a total of over 20 turkeys. That's a lot of bird, and a lot of slicing.
In no time they are ready to come out of the oven and cool just a little to make the slicing easier. And this isn't all the birds. There's more in the oven just waiting to come out.
As you might expect, it's not just turkeys. There are other things that need tending to, like making gravy, for example.
But enough talk. Let's get to the slicing. This year it only required a couple of expert hands to complete the job. Dom and Dan made short work of that .
The dining room all set to receive this years guests. This year, the dinner was held at the Southbury Baptist Church. Thanks to those folks for all the work that went into converting their sanctuary to a cozy dining room.
Ahh desert. Maybe we should start here and just forget the main course. Pies from several sources just sliced and waiting their turn at the table.
The welcome was warm, even though the day wasn't. Thanksgiving proved to be a cold and rainy day. But spirits were high inside.
In the kitchen, things are just beginning to heat up as the crew of volunteers readies the many side dishes.
Not everyone is able to join us at the church for dinner. Some are not able to get out, others, like the police, fire and ambulance crews are on duty. But, meals are prepared and sent out for those folks, with as much care as if they were with us.
Please sign in, and put on a name tag, so we'll all know who you are. No strangers here, just new friends we haven't met yet.
Look at all those pies. Oh my, can I sneak a small piece before dinner. No!! of course not. Shame on me for even thinking such a thing.
Before dinner, there were several young musicians whe gave of their time and talent to entertain the guests. Here are two on the piano and flute.
Any questions? Judy gathers some volunteers together to go over the last minute instrutions.
Luckily, there were plenty of umbrellas to shelter folks while they walked in to the dinner. Not very nice outside, but warm and welcoming once in the door.
Hungry? Please try the appetizer table. Plenty of snacks to hold you until the main course arrives.
And another one of our young friends showing his talent to the guests.
The line forms here. Dinner is served buffet style, one table at a time. And does it look and smell delicious.
As in past years, the Baptist Church provides the clean up crew for the dinner. And here they all are, eager to start.
