Tour de Tribury XVIII
September 25, 2010

The Southbury Faith In Action Committee again sponsored this year's Tour de Tribury Bike and Walk-A-Thon, the eighteenth year for the Tour. As before, the proceeds from the event went to support the Southbury Fuel Bank, an organization that helps residents of Southbury keep their homes warm throughout the winter season. Our thanks go out to the sponsors of the event, the riders, and the Knights of Columbus for their world famous Hot Dogs, and the many volunteers who made the day a success. These pictures show but a small part of the day. The day was made for a bike ride. Cool, bright sun, just perfect.

Joe is ready to answer all questions about the route, registration process, water stops, lunch and any other concerns the riders may have.

And just in case you missed it the first time, you get the information again just before leaving. A large group of riders for the 50 mile ride are eager to get going.

Nancy from the Southbury Fuel Bank was here for all rides and walks to thank the participants for all the good they are doing in helping their neighbors keep warm this winter.

Rev. Garrett Walkup, Asst. Pastor of the Community Chapel was present for the 50 mile ride to offer a prayer of thanks for the good being done, and also for the safe return of the riders.

And they're off. The day started a bit cloudy and cool, which is good for the 50 mile folk. The heat arrived later in the morning, but it was a very pleasant start.

No sooner had the 50 mile riders disappeared down the road than the 25 mile riders started to arrive. Another dedicated group, all hoping to make the cold weather a bit better for their neighbors.

And the usual send-off. Another large group of riders to go the 25 miles through the surrounding towns. A great day for a ride, foliage changing, good company.

What an interesting rig! I understand that the rider in the back is all of four years old, and expected to do his part in pedaling. Great family fun.

A generally younger group is ready to tackle the 10 mile ride. This is probably the nicest ride of all. It goes from Sacred Heart Church to Shepaug Dam on River Rd., and returns. What a great day for a nice, (mostly) flat and very scenic ride along the river.

Each ride has a "Sag Wagon" at the end just in case. Just in case of a breakdown, or just plain weariness.

Meanwhile, back in the kitchen...As usual, the Southbury Knights of Columbus and friends were busy preparing a delicious lunch for the riders and volunteers to enjoy on their return. The Women's Group at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints was good enough to prepare and donate a supply of home made pies for desert. That alone made the ride worth the effort.

And there was plenty of food. World Famous hot dogs and other goodies from the Knights, pies from the Women's Group at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, and plenty of everything. All to be followed by a drawing for a wide variety of door prizes. Good times for a good cause. How much better could things be?

And so another year closes on the Tour de Tribury. And next week, the planning committee will meet for one last time to review the program, and start planning for next year. If you would be interested in helping plan this wonderful event, drop an e-mail. See You Then!!
