On May 1, 2010, the Southbury Faith In Action (SoFIA) Committee sponsored the annual HomeFront Project. Local volunteers are used to restore an area home to a safe, warm and dry condition. Volunteers from the area spent the day working on the project. Working from early morn until dusk, the volunteers were able to bring a little help, and a lot of love to the homeowner. Click here for more information on the HomeFront projects.

Volunteers Meeting

Just before the big day, all volunteers are invited to a meeting to review the project, explain what is needed, and just get to know each other.

The volunteers have an opportunity to meet before the work day to get an idea of what will be expected. Lauren gave a quick introduction, then passed the baton which she has carried so well for many years on to Arlene to carry on.
Some explanation about what is expected by one of the work site captains.
Pastor Scott Nessel of St. James was there to find out what to expect and how he might help.

HomeFront

Saturday, May 1, 2010. All HomeFront projects take place on the first Saturday in May. Just one day. Not a big commitment of time, but a lot of work go into the planning and execution of this day. What follows is just the tip of the iceberg, showing some highlights of the activity that day. Many thanks to all those who volunteered their time and talent to help a neighbor.
Project 1603. Here we are. Step right up, please register so we'll know who's here. Please have some juice, or a snack before you start. Please don't get hurt. Have a wonderful day.
Raking is always a popular job at any of these work sites. A little work, and before you know it, the place is transformed.
A little Mother / Son bonding as well as some painting going on here. If you would like to hear their comments about the days activity, and why they came, click here. Use your "BACK" button to return to this page.
This will be the straightest post in the county. A couple of pros checking, rechecking, and realigning to make sure.
More raking, this time in the sand box. And it took a lot more sand than was first thought to fill the box.
Kitchen work included a new counter. Never an easy task. Measure twice, cut once was the order of the day.
Painting is another of those tasks that makes a big difference in the home. Seems simple, but it never is. Luckily, we had plenty of eager volunteers to apply the paint, sometimes to the wall, sometimes to themselves.
Ah, the always popular Task List. Never ask what needs to be done. It's all laid out here for anyone to see. Looks like some of those are already completed.
Elder Hefferman of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints was kind enough to offer a blessing before lunch in thanksgiving of the opportunity to help a neighbor, and for all the work of the volunteers.
Just before lunch, we managed to get a group shot of almost everyone working at the site today. Some are still working inside, or in the front, but most were able to stop long enough to have their picture taken.
As usual the Southbury Knights of Columbus were there to provide a tasty and filling lunch. They brought along their work famous hot dogs, chips, and a vegi platter. After a hard work day, it was delicious.
Form a line. Please be patient. There is enough for everyone. No one goes hungry at one of there events. Glad to see everyone is wearing their official T-Shirt.
How can we ever thank all those wonderful people who heard the cry of a neighbor in need, and responded with all their heart. All the young folk who came, donations of food and drink. Thank you all so much. We hope to see you all again next year.
